All You Need to Know About Bulletproof Coffee

Marco from Caffeinated Face is a coffee lover and today’s guest post by him is all about Bulletproof Coffee, also known as Keto Coffee! Let’s kick it off!

There are so many diets that can allow you to lose weight, but the most effective one I’ve ever undertaken myself has to be the Ketogenic diet.

If you haven’t heard about this yet, then you need to give it a try! In a nutshell, it is a high-fat, moderate protein and very low carbohydrate diet. I’m meaning, so low that you’ll be wondering if you’re eating much throughout the day.

Let me assure you, that when you eat the right fats in this diet, it can keep you feeling full for a long time and it doesn’t bring on those hunger pains when on a regular carb diet.

Once you complete one to two days of the diet, your body enters into ketosis and your body will use stored fat to burn energy.

The type of fats is not just any fats, it has to be unsaturated fats that you can get from avocado, flaxseed meal, cheese or eggs and even the right type of oil.

Bulletproof coffee slips into that list of foods, because it is usually something much better than having plain black coffee.

With that aside, let’s dive right into all you need to know about Bulletproof coffee!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

bulletproof coffee ingredientsBulletproof coffee is a black coffee mixed with either butter or MCT oil instead of fresh milk. It is usually consumed on the Ketogenic diet and is used to kickstart your day.

My personal preference is to mix it with fresh full fat cream as it tends to taste much better than butter or MCT oil.

There are no additional benefits with having Bulletproof coffee with fresh cream, however having black coffee with MCT oil allows you to fuel physical and mental performance and also supports fat burning.

The best time to have a Bulletproof coffee is early in the morning, immediately upon waking and it tends to give you the best physical performance if you’re hitting the gym first thing.

Why drink bulletproof coffee on keto?

People drink bulletproof coffee for a range of reasons, but the biggest one that pops to mind is ensuring you keep your fat intake high so you can burn fat for longer.

If you read a little bit further below, you’ll see that there are also several benefits to having Bulletproof coffee in your Keto diet.

The main reason I drank Bulletproof coffee was to curb my sweet tooth cravings, and guess what? It really worked, so if you’re on a Keto diet but still have a little bit of a snack habit, considered having this caffeinated drink on your diet.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Bad for you?

Like with anything in excess it can be bad for your health! Taking it every now and then with a healthy breakfast most likely won’t lead to any health effects.

Bulletproof coffee can be high in saturated fat, for example when mixing with a tonne of fresh cream or butter, and can lead to higher than normal cholesterol levels!

You can definitely expect an increase in cholesterol levels when on the Ketogenic diet anyway, due to consumption of a lot of unsaturated fats.

Can you order a Bulletproof coffee at a Starbucks or a Cafe?

Simple answer, yes! It is definitely possible to order a Bulletproof coffee at a local cafe or Starbucks.

To do so you can ask the staff can I order a Bulletproof coffee, if they know what it takes to make one, your coffee will be ready before you know it.

But what if they have no clue what you’re talking about? The way I go around this is by asking for black coffee, tall black or americano works best. Then asking the staff to top it up with fresh cream.

If you’re at a cafe, they’ll also have butter around (which they use for muffins and other things), so it can pay to ask if they can add butter to it.

At my local cafe, there was no extra cost for adding full cream to my black coffee to make it a Bulletproof coffee. But some places may request you to pay a small additional cost, which is always best to clarify before ordering one.

How to make Your Own Bulletproof Coffee at Home

There are so many ways you can make a Bulletproof, but my preferred way is with a coffee maker machine.

The machine I have is an espresso machine, that is capable of making long black coffee however if you don’t have a coffee maker, then instant coffee works really well too.

Once you have prepared your black coffee it’s time to add a bit of fresh cream ,MCT oil or butter. Usually two tablespoons of unsalted butter and a tablespoon of MCT oil will do the trick.

Below is a summary of the instructions and ingredients required to make Bulletproof coffee.

  1. 1 Cup of hot black coffee ( or about 12 fl. ounces).
  2. 2 Tablespoons of unsalted butter.
  3. 1 Tablespoon of MCT oil or Coconut Oil.
  4. Mix it together by stirring all the ingredients or use a blender.

My personal preference is to use a blender, because it distributes the unsalted butter and MCT/Coconut oil more evenly than compared to stirring it.

It leads to some of the best Bulletproof coffee I’ve ever had, so highly recommend it.

What are the benefits of Bulletproof Coffee?

There are several health benefits that can come from having Bulletproof coffee while on a Ketogenic diet.

  1. Improves your mood – When you have Bulletproof coffee, your general wellbeing and mental state is much more balanced than when on an unorganized diet.
  2. Increase energy – Since the Bulletproof coffee has caffeine in it, you’ll benefit by having increased energy and mental clarity.
  3. Helps you lose weight – By keeping you in ketosis, you’ll be able to burn more fat compared to having a sugary vanilla latte from Starbucks.
  4. It curbs sugar cravings – Bulletproof coffee will keep you topped up for much longer, curbing those addictive sugar cravings or snack times.

These are some of the main benefits that can come from having Bulletproof coffee. I can vouch for them, because I had Bulletproof coffee for 6 months straight, about once daily.

How many cups of Bulletproof coffee can you have in a day?

This question shouldn’t be taken lightly, because with everything in excess it can lead to some nasty side effects.

I personally was aiming for 1 cup a day, because the main goal of the Keto diet is to increase your fats but also while consuming less calories.

With a Bulletproof coffee, you can tend to have 440 calories in a single serve and if you have too many, you’ll be exceeding the maximum calories allowed in a day.

Some people tend to have smaller serves of keto, so if you have two serves a day consider reducing the volume of black coffee and the additives so that you have around 200 calories per serve.

It’s definitely best to only have one serve, as you can get your other fats from a nice bacon, eggs and avocado meal!

Final Thoughts

So if you’re going to be starting a Keto diet anytime soon and looking for ways to get your caffeine fix, then I’d recommend having Bulletproof coffee.

It can really help you stay in ketosis longer than usual, which requires hard work in my opinion, and I’d hate for you to break that full fledged fat burning state.

One final thing to add, if you’re a coffee addict like me having up to 4 coffee’s or more a day, try not to overdo it with Bulletproof coffee and always follow a well balanced healthy diet.
